Proposal for a new winery on the coast of northeastern Spain.
Mas Mares is an abandoned rural country house in the north-eastern part of Catalonia. It is located in the vicinity of the coastal town Roses in the natural park area of Cap de Creus. The surrounding consists of approximately 50 acres of vines, which makes the area very interesting for local viticulture.
The proposal consists in the complete restoration of the old house and its integration in the new winery complex. As a result, the new winery consists of two long shaped buildings with sloped roofs. The form of the roofs is the imitation of the surroundings hills, creating am artificial landscape within the natural landscape. The manufacturing zone and cellar spaces are located underground, therefore favoring a better temperature and humidity for the production process.
The fermentation hall opens up to the North East and South West to take in natural ventilation, which is critical to the verification process due to CO2 emissions. Offices and storage are located in the north building, separated from the existing house, whereas the tasting rooms are located in the south building. This part is connected directly to the country house. The shop and exposition area are located in that restored house which in order to allow a better access for clients and visitors. The project’s main goal was to create a sustainable building with minimal intervention on the landscape.
