Detroit Station For The Arts

International competition entry for the renovation of the Michigan Central Station.

The main effort was put in the preservation of the existing structure of this historical landmark of Detroit. The Michigan Central Station with its symmetrical shape and classical proportions offered an opportunity to transform its interior space. Most of the ground floor is dedicated to the exhibition area of art. Wide open spaces and high ceiling offer the perfect setting for any piece of modern art, from small exhibits to big sculptures.

The opening in the floor of the main hall allows a visual relation with the basement area. The ramp on the south side of the building leads from the concourse directly to the new park on the train tracks. The roof of the southern part has been eliminated in order to create a new auditorium as an volumetric extension of the existing building which stands in a strong relationship with the old train lines. The abandoned lines have been converted to a lineal park. The effort was put in organizing the spaces so that no structural elements of the floor above had to been altered. The first twelve floors of the tower contain ateliers and residences. The upper floors house a hotel and the restaurant. The rooftop is accessible and offers a magnificent view on the surrounding area.
